If there’s one dinner that will never let you down, it’s this homemade teriyaki chicken. We’re talking a glossy, sweet savory stir fry that comes together faster than you can decide what to order for takeout. It’s juicy chicken coated in a silky homemade teriyaki sauce that tastes like it came straight from your favorite Japanese restaurant- minus the delivery fee.

When you’re craving bold flavors, stir-fries can put you into your comfort zone. Think chicken stir fry, shrimp fried rice, Mongolian beef… but this teriyaki chicken is the weeknight winner. Pair it with steamed broccoli and a fluffy bowl of white rice, and you’ve got the kind of cozy, satisfying meal that makes everyone at the table happy (yes, even the picky eaters.)
Ingredients
- 1 ½ pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, diced into 1-inch cubes
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 Tbsp. finely chopped ginger
- salt and pepper, to taste
- ¼ cup tamari soy sauce, or coconut aminos
- ¼ cup sake
- 2 Tbsp. honey
- ¼ cup mirin
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced green onion
Directions
Step 1
In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sake, mirin, and honey until it’s silky and smooth. Set it aside for now while we bring the chicken to life.
Step 2
After that, heat a drizzle of oil in a large deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Toss in the chicken and let it sizzle for 1–2 minutes on one side until it’s beautifully golden. Season with salt and pepper, then flip and give the other side the same treatment.
Step 3
Give your teriyaki sauce a quick whisk, then pour it into the pan along with the minced garlic and ginger. Stir everything together, letting the sauce bubble and thicken over 4–5 minutes, coating the chicken in that glossy, savory sweet goodness.
Step 4
Once that’s done, it’s time to serve! Pile the teriyaki chicken on a fluffy bed of white rice, add a side of steamed broccoli for that pop of green. Finally, finish with a sprinkle of diced green onions and sesame seeds, then serve and enjoy.
