A Message From Our Founder
Dr. Alex Borja
Founder And Physical Therapist At Borja Physical Therapy & Weight Loss Clinic
Be honest...How would you describe your current injury or limitation?
Painful? Persistent? Aggravating? Nagging?
Well if you said anything other than, "100% better" you've come to the right place. Assuming you've started to look into how to help yourself online, it's likely you've tried to stretch, use heat packs or cold packs, try exercises and purchased an item promising to rid your pain.
...without necessarily knowing what works and what can cause more harm.
You're busy and trying to get rid of this pain fast. But is your injury really getting any better?
Are the steps you've taken so far getting any MEANINGFUL results that would allow you to return to any and all activities you need to do - pain free?
When I asked myself this question after suffering an injury in 2008, I too was "spinning my wheels" and not getting anywhere.

Here at Borja PT, our world revolves around our patients’ needs! Our experienced and highly trained team is here to make recovery a reachable goal! We specialize in keeping you active. We empower your decision to heal the natural way, without relying on pain pills, injections, or surgery. So, can you do laser and physical therapy together?
Laser And Physical Therapy
Laser therapy is often with other kinds of therapy, especially physical therapy. In fact, using both together makes treatment even more effective.
Think of the two as working double time to help you recover and get back to enjoying the things you love.
The purpose of laser therapy is to reduce pain and heal damaged tissue. PT, on the other hand, aims to restore your function while managing pain. It focuses on strengthening muscles that stabilize the body.
Speeding up your healing with laser therapy can help you reach your PT goals quicker than you would by doing one or the other.
Basically, the laser helps you advance through the different stages of healing. It stimulates cells to quickly reduce pain, which means you’re able to move easier. More importantly, it provides you with an excellent opportunity early on to progress your exercise program. You’re able to do more than you normally would due to pain.
Studies have found that combining laser and physical therapy heals different injuries throughout the body. The results are consistent and impressive. For example, they show significant improvements in pain, range of motion, and function. Not only that, they even found significant differences after 3 and 6 months as well.
Improving With Lasers
Here at Borja PT, we use the Lightforce FXi Laser. It’s a quick and easy way to improve your pain. Plus, you’ll feel the effects even after your treatment.

Typically an insurance plan will have a deductible, coinsurance or copayment, and an out-of-pocket maximum. Although every insurance plan is different and may not have each of these, it’s important to understand them and how they work. So, will you have to pay for physical therapy? Let’s discuss it!
Coverage
Your plan’s deductible may not apply to every health care service that you need. You might not have to pay your deductible for things like physical therapy or office visits. In these cases, the insurance company will pay some or all of the bill entirely.
Coinsurance amounts can be different depending on the type of service. For instance, there may be a 10% coinsurance for wellness visits and a 20% coinsurance for exam visits. While some services may not require a coinsurance at all.
Most insurance plans have some sort of copay for one or more services. Each service has a different copay. For example, you may have a $30 copay for specialist visits, but a $50 copay for lab tests. On the other hand, some services may not require a copay at all.
Depending on your plan, your insurance may cover physical therapy completely, at no cost to you. As a courtesy, our billing department verifies your health insurance benefits prior to your first visit. It is important to understand that you are under contract with your insurance company. Your Insurance company determines the amount owed to Borja PT. This is never determined by Borja PT.
Please do not ask the billing department to adjust any charges. The insurance company determines these payments and we are not permitted to adjust them. It is very important for you to know your benefits so unexpected balances do not occur. The billing department files with many insurance companies that have several different types of plans. Therefore, you must make sure your benefits are accurate.

Our highly trained staff members at Borja Physical Therapy work to do their best to make your experience pleasant. So, will your auto insurance cover physical therapy? Let’s discuss this some more!
We are happy to treat patients with personal injury or motor vehicle accident claims. The billing department will need the information to verify each claim prior to service. For example, they will need the claim number, the adjuster’s name and contact phone number, and the claim mailing address. The billing department will contact the claims adjuster to get further details of your coverage.
Should the auto insurance company deny your claims, the claims will be submitted to your medical insurance. If you do not have medical insurance, the balance will become your responsibility. Please let us know if you have an attorney involved, along with their name and phone number as well.

Finding a good physical therapy clinic you can trust is tricky. Similarly, it can also take a lot of diligent effort too. Above all else, you should look for a clinic that provides helpful expert advice and care. Here are 3 stages to consider when looking to choose a physical therapy clinic:
- The Research Test
- The Call Test
- The Service Test
The Research Test
The Research Test is where you’ll start when thinking about finding that perfect physical therapy clinic for you. It involves mostly online activity. It’s also the most time-friendly of the 3 tests as well. Basically, you’re seeing how potential clinics represent themselves online. For example, the areas you’ll want to look into are:
- Online Reviews
- Website Information
The Call Test
The Call Test is exactly what it sounds like. You’re calling the potential clinics you’ve narrowed down from step 1 to see if they make the cut. During the call, you’ll want to look for things like:
- Tone: Initial Friendliness
- On-Hold Time
- Concern Towards You Rather Than Money
- Scheduling Availability
- Licensed Therapists
The Service Test
The Service Test is where you attend your first session to see if they are the right clinic for you. From the time you open the door to the time you step foot back outside, you’ll want to review things. For example:
- Greeted Immediately Upon Entering The Clinic
- Initial Impression Of Cleanliness
- Wait Time Before Being Seen
- Thoroughness Of The Evaluation
- Therapist’s Expected Goals And Course Of Action

Our clinic offers a private changing room that you may use if you need to change your clothes before your session. So, how should you dress for your physical therapy sessions?
We encourage our patients to wear looser clothing, such as workout clothes, to their sessions. This allows the therapist to easily access your injury. It also doesn’t restrict your movements during your sessions.
For injuries such as knee or upper thigh injuries, the therapist may suggest wearing shorts in order to reach the site of injury, while not restricting movement or causing discomfort from rolling up the pant leg.
We offer private, secure areas to keep your belongings next to each treatment table. We recommend arriving a few minutes before your scheduled appointment so you have time to change. This helps to make sure you spend your time working with the physical therapist.

Will Your Insurance Cover Physical Therapy?
Typically, most insurance companies offer some level of coverage for physical therapy under each of their plans. That level of coverage can vary between each policy, however.
When it comes to plan and network types, you’re looking at the type of services that are covered in your plan. As well as the doctors you are allowed to see. These can either be in or out of network. Some plan types let you see any doctor. Other plans can limit your choices or charge you more to see out of network providers.
The different plan types include HMOs, PPOs, POSs, and EPOs. Each plan type has a different amount of freedom for choosing providers.
Depending on your plan, you may have to meet a deductible, pay a copay, or physical therapy may be covered in full at 100% by your insurance company.
Typically a policy will have a deductible, coinsurance or copayment, and an out of pocket maximum. Although every plan is different and may not have each of these, it’s important to understand them and how they work. It’s especially useful when it comes time to choose future health care plans.
Deductibles
A deductible is an amount you owe before your plan begins to pay.
The deductible may not apply to all health care services that you need. You may not need to pay for services like PT or chiropractic care. In these cases, the insurance company will pay some or all of the bill.
Coinsurance
A coinsurance is a percentage of the costs you are responsible for paying after you’ve met your deductible.
Coinsurance amounts can be different depending on the type of service. There may be 10% coinsurance for chiropractic visits and 20% coinsurance for exam visits. Some services may not require coinsurance at all.
Copayment
A copayment (or copay) is a dollar amount you pay for health care services. Copays are due after you’ve paid your deductible.
Most plans have some sort of copay for one or more services. Each service has a different copay. You may have a $30 copay for doctor visits, but a $50 copay for lab tests. Some services may not require a copay at all.
Out Of Pocket Max
The out-of-pocket maximum (OOPM) is the most you will ever have to pay during a policy period. Your deductible, coinsurance, and copays go toward your OOPM. Once you have met this amount, the insurance company will pay 100% of all remaining covered services for that year.
The OOPM does not include your monthly premiums. Think of your premium like paying for a gym membership. You pay $29.99 a month to use the gym. Your premium is the monthly payments you make each month to your insurance company to have healthcare coverage.
Know Your Coverage
As a courtesy, our Billing Department will verify your insurance benefits. If you do not have in network medical benefits, please speak with our billing coordinator to discuss self-pay options. There is no payment plan option for self-pay patients.
It is VERY important for each patient to know their individual benefits so unexpected balances do not occur. The Borja PT Billing Department files with many insurances that offer several different plans. Therefore, the patient must make sure their benefits are accurate.
Workers Compensation/Motor Vehicle Accidents
Additionally, we are happy to treat patients with personal injury or motor vehicle accident claims. The billing department will need certain information to verify each claim prior to service. For example, they will need the claim number, adjuster’s name, and contact phone number. As well as the claim mailing address.
Should the Workers Comp or Auto company deny your claims, the claims will then be submitted to your Medical Insurance. If you do not have medical insurance, however, the balance will become your responsibility. Please let us know if you have an attorney involved, along with their name and phone number as well.

We empower your decision to self-heal the natural way, without relying on pain pills, injections or surgery. So, can physical therapy help back pain? The answer is yes!
Can Physical Therapy Help Back Pain?
Back pain is an extremely serious problem. It can significantly affect your mobility and limit your function. Physical therapy is a proven and effective way to control back pain, as well as help prevent it from occurring in the future.
When you come to Borja PT, you’ll know you’re getting the best care. Believe it or not, when doctors need a physical therapist, they come here. Not to mention, they send their closest friends & family as well. For that reason, we pride ourselves on caring for the people you love most.
First-Hand Experience
We specialize in back pain because we’ve experienced it ourselves. In fact, the owner of Borja Physical Therapy, Dr. Alex Borja, knows exactly what it’s like to have severe back pain. During his undergraduate study, Dr. Alex suffered an injury while working out that left him debilitated.
He was unable to go to class or even get up from bed most days. It was at this time that he decided he needed to find a safe, effective way to not only get out of pain. More importantly, he needed to get back to daily living again. He studied various techniques from Europe and, after months of hard work, was able to successfully treat his back condition.
Since that time, Dr. Alex has dedicated his life to helping others with their back pain. He has created a specialized program to manage back pain. He focuses on strengthening targeted muscle groups that are responsible for stabilizing the spinal column and pelvis.
After your initial evaluation, the physical therapist will create a home exercise program for you. These exercises are designed to safely strengthen your muscles. All without the risk of making your injury worse. As you advance throughout your Plan Of Care, the therapist will add to your home exercise program.
What Is A Home Exercise Program?
The primary goal of the home exercise program is to aid your recovery by strengthening specific muscles in a specific order. These exercises should be done on days when you have physical therapy appointments. More importantly, you should do them on the days that you do not have therapy. These exercises play a large role in the progression of recovery from back pain.
Doing your exercises on the days that you don’t have therapy will help you recover quicker. Far beyond just physical therapy alone. They act as a one-two punch in your recovery, so to speak. In fact, you should do your home exercise program even after you’re done with physical therapy. It’s important to prioritize these exercises at least 3 times a week. This will prevent your injury or condition from coming back as a result.

We empower your decision to self-heal the natural way, without relying on pain pills, injections or surgery. So, what is the difference between physical therapy and chiropractic care?
The Difference Between Physical Therapy And Chiropractic Care
Physical therapy and chiropractic care both aim to relieve pain and recover from an injury or health condition. However, there are many differences between the two. The biggest difference is their method of treatment.
Physical therapy focuses on joint alignment and movement patterns. They also look at imbalances and limitations in motion. They work to help restore movement. This involves treating the body as a whole. Typically, they will use stretches, exercises, and hands-on techniques. Their focus is to get people back to doing the things that they love.
Chiropractic care focuses on treating the spine and joints from mechanical disorders. They highlight proper alignment as well. Chiropractors use techniques to do adjustments that help the body heal itself. They often treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, joint pain, and neck pain. They work on correcting the spine in order to relieve pain.
Both treatments work very well when combined together. In fact, many people heal quicker when they do physical therapy and chiropractic treatments.
Communicating With Your Doctors
We pride ourselves on providing the highest of standards when it comes to patient care. This is why we continuously communicate with your doctor and other providers, like chiropractors.
They will start by asking questions about your injury or condition. Then they will ask how it happened, what movements cause pain, what activities you’re not able to do, and more. Next, they will ask about your past medical history. They will also look at any imaging reports that you may have. Then they will begin an assessment.
During the assessment, they will take measurements, such as range of motion and muscle strength. They will do testing and get other information related to your injury. Based on what they find, they will create a Plan Of Care for your recovery. They will also set goals for you to hit.
The therapist will write their findings from the first visit and send them to your doctor. As you continue with therapy, they will send more updates as well. Click here to learn more about what to expect on your first visit.
After your first visit, the therapist will also create a home exercise program for you. These exercises are designed to safely strengthen your muscles. All without the risk of making your injury worse.
During the first few weeks, they will have you do only the home exercises. This will help them track your condition and the effectiveness of the exercises. It also helps them figure out what may be causing pain. Please let the therapist know if you are seeing a chiropractor so they can take that into account as well.

How Many Physical Therapy Visits Are Needed?
Physical therapy focuses on joint alignment and movement patterns. They also look at imbalances and limitations in motion. They work to help restore movement. This involves treating the body as a whole. Typically, they will use stretches, exercises, and hands-on techniques. Their focus is to get people back to doing the things that they love.
The number of PT sessions you need will depend on a few things. For instance, the type of injury you have. As well as the severity of the injury. Other things, like your job, past medical history, and even your insurance can impact the number of visits needed.
During your first visit, the PT will start by asking questions about your injury or condition. They will ask how it happened, what movements cause pain, what activities you’re not able to do, and more. Next, they will ask about your medical history. They will also look at any imaging reports that you may have.
Then, they will take measurements, such as range of motion and muscle strength. They’ll do testing and get other information related to your injury. Based on this information, the therapist will create a Plan Of Care for you. They will also set goals to meet.
Follow-Up Sessions
Typically, injuries make the most progress from going to PT 3 times per week for the first 4-6 weeks. After that time period, the therapist will assess your condition and decide on the next phase in your Plan Of Care. Depending on what they see, they may decrease the frequency of your visits to 2 times per week.
Some Worker’s Comp insurers have a set amount of visits allowed for each condition. Additionally, some post-surgical conditions require PT for the first 5 days straight immediately after the surgery. Here at Borja PT, we believe that every person and every injury is unique. Therefore, we do not take a cookie-cutter approach when determining your Plan Of Care and your road to recovery.
