Homemade Salted Soft Pretzel Recipe

Whether you’re bringing a dish to tailgate before the football game, or you’re just in the mood for something delicious, this homemade salted soft pretzel recipe definitely will not leave you disappointed. So much so, you may even feel like you’re at the infamous pretzel stand inside the mall (they’re that good!) Not to mention, they’re also super simple to make. That means you can easily make them early Sunday morning, ready for the big game that afternoon. Even if the only part about football you care about is the snacks, you sure to have a good time.

Homemade Salted Soft Pretzel

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 2.25 tsp instant quick rise yeast
  • 1 cup warm water, heated to 110° F
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 12.5 oz. all purpose flour 2.5 cups
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • Vegetable oil for greasing the sheet pan
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Directions:

Step 1

To start, add the yeast, warmed water (that is at least 110° – that’s important), and sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer and gently stir together with your fingers. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy, with bubbles beginning to multiply. Next, add the flour and salt. Mix everything in the bowl with dough hook on medium-low for 5 minutes. The dough should feel soft and smooth, not sticky to the touch. Once the dough has formed, cover the bowl with a small towel and let it rise for 30 minutes.

Step 2

Preheat the oven to 450° F, and lightly grease a baking sheet with vegetable oil. Alternatively, you can use parchment paper or a silicone mat as well. Then, grab a small ball and whisk together the warm water and baking soda. Cook in the microwave for 1 minute, until the water is nearly steaming.

Step 3

After your dough has risen, place it onto a lightly oiled countertop or lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a long rope, then into the iconic pretzel shape. Now, carefully dip each pretzel into the warm soda wash with a fork and place onto the greased baking sheet (or silicone mat). Sprinkle each pretzel with coarse sea salt, then let them rest for 10 minutes.

Step 4

Bake in the oven for 9-10 minutes, until the pretzels are golden brown. While they’re still fresh and hot out of the oven, brush each pretzel with melted butter. Serve warm and enjoy!
